Randy Howard, Fiddle Player

FAMED BLUEGRASS FIDDLER Randy Howard passed away at 4:45 PM on the afternoonof June 29th after a long bout with cancer. The funeral was held in Georgia and a memorial is being planned for Nashville.

Randy played on numerous albums and was the Fiddle King of the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 as well as an impressive record at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas having won or placed as follows: 1984 (2nd), 1985 (1), 1986 (2), 1990 (1), 1996 (1). He was also the last and youngest person ever towin the honour of World Champion at the Union Grove, North Carolina World Championship in l979.

Randy came out with his acclaimed debut CD of mostly original tunes, Survival of the Fiddlist CD in l993 (Bela Fleck plays banjo) and also shares the highlights with Kathy Chiavola on her album The Harvest, released in 1996.

Randy did a lot to promote bluegrass both in the U.S. and the world over. He will be sorely missed.

Darol Anger: A New CD

FIDDLE VIRTUOSO DAROL ANGER, one of the few instrumentalists who can claim to having written the book on new acoustic music, has released a very special collection of musical conversations with some of his favourite fiddlers entitled ‘Diary of a Fiddler’ on July 20th. Anger spent 3 years recording music for the album which features special guests Natalie MacMaster, Sam Bush, Martin Hayes, Stuart Duncan, Tim O’Brien, John Hartford and Alasdair Fraser. Anger also has a new album out with long time musical companion Mike Marshall entitled Jam.

The Andy Townend Award Winners

This award was announced in NWBN May/June issue. This is the first time it has been awarded and the winners of are: Steve Manser (Stevenage; Herts); for his song Shadow On The Mountain; and Andrew Zinn (Alcester; Warks) for his instrumental The Black River. This year they share the £125 award.

The judges and trustees of the award fund are Bob Winquist; Alan Ward and Mick Audsley. They are all of respected members of the British Bluegrass community and knew Andy well.

It is hoped to keep the award running; making presentations on alternate years. Congratulations to Jeanette Williams who is steadily climbing the charts with her debut solo project Cherry Blossoms in the Springtime and her single (Break My Heart). Break My Heart is also currently #1 on Prime Cuts of Bluegrass (Volume 38).

Mountain Heart (DS-4002) and Tony & Gary Williamson (DS-3003) projects are into the final stages of production and will be available shortly. Mountain Heart will be featured on Tuesday, October 19th, at the IBMA's World of Bluegrass week.

Watch for DSR recording artist Dan Tyminski on the road with The Lonesome River Band. Dan is doing some touring with the LRB, playing fiddle on occasional dates. He's now been dubbed Dan ‘IIIrd-Tyme-Inski’ for those who remember Dan as a former LRB'er. Dan also has big news on a possible movie deal that will be announced later this year! Dan continues to work on his solo project, most likely to be released early Autumn.
