What The Editor Has To Say

THE STAR EVENT IN THE NORTH WEST was the Tony Trishka/David Grier/Barry Mitterhoff concertat Whitworth and those of you who didn’t go missed a real treat! I didn’t think I could be entertained by an instrumental concert no matter how good the instrumentalists, but on this occasion I was proved wrong. They managed to maintain interest by every device possible: professional presentation (even though they were dressed exctemely casually!); by changing the style of music from lots of real tradgrass to every-other-grass; by playing in all 7 possible permutations of 3; by using interesting, entertaining, relevant introductions to many of the tunes (which they often called “songs”). And, of course, by the exceptionally high standard of musicianship, which goes without saying. All with a handsome supper thrown in for £7.50 a head. Well done to all concerned!

Unfortunately, due to pressure of work and lack of time Jean just couldn’t write up a report on the first support band.

WE HAVE A NEW monthly jam session club in the area - at Buxworth - see Sessions. Allan and his cronies will be pleased to see you there - but the same goes for all the people who organise clubs and sessions in the area! If you really are a bluegrass fan why not go out there and support the people who are trying to promote and popularise it?

RUNNING THE NWBN and having a private life are almost mutually exclusive, so we are always grateful for special help that eases the load. One such special help now comes from Mike Craig of Mike’s Country Music Room in Aberdeen. It’s always very hard getting the latest CDs for review and Mike has come up trumps by sending not one but four CDs - including the latest J.D.Crowe and the New South offering Come On Down To My World, which we can keep for a prize quiz! And he sent us the *wonderful* Jim & Jesse boxed set - reviewed in this issue. Mike gives NWBN discounts - mention NWBN when you write for your free catalogue! MCMR Advert

OOPS! ERRORS CREPT INTO the guitar Tablature “Beaumont Rag” in the January issue: (1) It is in C major, not G as stated; (2) the 2nd note of the 4th bar is a G, i.e. fret 8 on the 2nd string, not fret 10 as stated. Sorry, Eric!
