What The Editor Has To Say

SAT IN FRONT OF COMPUTER, mind blank, wondering where to start. Phone rings - daughters boy friend from California -explain problem. “How’s about ‘Happy New Year?’”, Doc says. Good idea. Happy New Year to all!

For Jean and I 1998 was a much better year than 97 - we haven’t been ill, no-one in the family has died and my vision has improved considerably. We’ve been to see our daughter in San Francisco and played some venues in some, er, unusual places... That will make an interesting article, but not for this issue - no room! For now there is a report of the super concert we attended in Palo Alto, CA, on Suzanne Thomas (of Dry Branch Fire Squad) And Friends. And what friends! But on the home front we’ve had Jack Lawrence and Jimmy Gaudreau in concert, and that is reported here also.

Big surprise for me was the fact of the this NWBN Internet Web Site receiving an award. I know that most readers are not ‘Internet enabled’; most don’t even have a computer. So many must wonder what I’m talking about. Well, if you can’t do it yourself, why not get a friend who can to show you our site? And by “our” I mean yours and mine - the “subs” money pays for it - £4.95 a month plus local phone calls. But now there’s no need to pay anything more than the calls - go to Curry’s or Dixons and ask for your *Free* Internet access! It’s so good that the BBMA web site has moved onto it.

But the year has had it’s downsides - not least Didmarton festival closing and, even worse, late-breaking news from Tom Travis about closing the Edale festival. There is a full report plus comments on a possible future for it.

I want to take this opportunity to send a big “Thank You” to all the people who have helped to make our News Mag the success it is - and I know it must be for so many people can’t be wrong! Those who write the articles, gather news snippets, phone in stories; take photos (usually me!); write the tabs, proof the articles; do the accounts and audit them; and those who send large, thin envelopes. And not least to Richard for printing it free of charge and the Sponsors, without whose funding (often more than £5.00!) it couldn’t be done!
