Earl and Louise Scruggs
Diamond Wedding Celebration
|
The function was hosted by the Gibson Instrument Co. at their The Gibson Café in Nashville, Tennessee. Gibson chauffeured Earl and Louise to the event in a long white limo. The cafe' was decorated with poster-size, blown up coloured photos of Earl & Louise taken around the time when they first met. The Gibson people found out that Earl & Louise had no wedding cake, so they had a beautiful one made for the party - another nice touch. Darrel Adkins and I arrived a little early to do some TV promo work with some of the stars in attendance. Soon the other guests started arriving, including Waylon Jennings, and his wife Jesse Colter, Marty Stuart and Connie Smith, Travis Tritt, Kitty Wells and her husband Johnny Wright, Patty Loveless, Jesse McReynolds, Tom T. Hall, Randy and Gary Scruggs, Glen Duncan, Jerry Douglas, Jimmy Martin, Eddie Stubbs, Sonny Osborne, Brother Oswald, Larry Stephenson, Del McCoury and many others connected with the music industry. They were as giddy as I was at the chance to be in the same room with Earl and hear him play. It was one of those moments in your life when it dawns on you that you are witnessing something that will be a part of music history. Earl & Louise looked very nice. Earl very distinguished in a dark suit, and Louise in a lovely evening gown. After the interviews everyone ate and then settled in for a jam session like no other - it was a wonderful experience to hear Earl play after all these years. Only two years ago he was recovering from heart and hip surgery, but today he is a picture of health and is picking daily. Darrel Adkins, a long time friend of Earl's, was able to talk Earl into playing at his festival The Bluegrass Classic in Columbus, Ohio on June 27th. Darrel named this show "The Concert of a Lifetime" and I think it really will be. John Tewell, Columbus, Ohio. | Write to John | Visit John's Web site |
