Saturday, 3rd May 1997 was a day Ill never forget. The Acme Band
sang a Gospel Set in Durham Cathedral, to an audience of about 150 seated
and numerous passing tourists. It all started when Trevor King arranged for
5 for the Gospel to sing there about a year ago, and he did the same for
us, getting the go-ahead at the end of March.
A journalist friend managed to have articles about us printed in several
newspapers across the North. One of them described us as
hillbillies!!! Maybe they werent too far from the truth?
We were approached by Radio Newcastle to sing a few songs in their studio
but, unfortunately, we couldnt all be there at the time the show went
out.
Only five minutes before we were due to start the Verger told us we
couldnt use the sound system, but eventually relented and we were on!
To our amazement there were row after row of people stretching down the main
aisle - goodness knows where they all came from! But to their credit they
stayed to the end. In what seemed like seconds the show was over and it was
back to reality - with our memories.
Our thanks to all at the cathedral who made it possible, and especially to
Trevor King.
