"Grass Cuttings"

  • Tom Travis and Friends appeared on BBC 1 Northern News on Tuesday 19th November. It seems that ‘The Powers That Be’ have given permission for bands to play on trains. Tom (guitar), Dave Howard (mandolin) and two friends took advantage of this and played/sang on a train to Edale, as well as on the platform - in the snow! Yes, it was the day the blizzards struck! Several passengers were interviewed and all made positive comments. It’s a pity the BBC didn’t show them playing Footsteps in The Snow in the snow - they didn’t show any Bluegrass at all - only regular folk!
  • Steve Read et.al. have had to put the formal Sheffield Bluegrass Club on hold for a while due to problems with the venue. In the meantime it is continuing as a Picking Session on MONDAY nights at The Bath Hotel, Victoria St., off West St., Sheffield. They will appreciate you’re support if you’re anywhere in the area.
  • Joff Lowson, guitarist/singer-songwriter of The Next Band (see Nov. NWBN: Didmarton Bluegrass Festival) is off to Australia for 2 or 3 months. The band is ‘on hold’ in the meantime but hopes to re-start when he gets back. Info: 01225-318130.
  • Alan Ward, one-time fiddle and mandolin player with the original Liverpool band The Bluegrass Ramblers, is now playing mandolin with A Band Like Alice. He fills the gap left by American picker Brad Johnson, who has gone back to the USA.
  • Since retiring Terry Holland (banjoist in Missing Strings) has discovered computers with a vengeance! He’s now set up a WWW home page dedicated to Bluegrass music and hopes to develop it to include sound clips from UK bands as well as photographs. Visit Terry at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/terry_holland/. You can Write to him at Terry_Holland@compuserve.com (from outside C’serve).
  • Chris Moreton is now the UK Champion Acoustic Guitarist after entering the Guitarist Magazine competition held at the National Music Show in November, performing his own arrangement of Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. There were 140 contestants in the acoustic section, representing all styles of playing, include. Jazz, Folk, Country, classical, etc. For a detailed report see Guitarist Magazine, March 1997, (which will be on sale in Smiths, Menzies, etc., by the 2nd week of February).
