Jim McReynolds Dies

Founding member of Jim & Jesse and The Virginia Boys,
Jim McReynolds died from cancer on New Years Eve.

Paul Priest writes

"Jim McReynolds of Jim and Jesse passed away new years eve at 7:00 p.m. Nashville time after a long battle with cancer. I played a gig with a country band tonight in Meade County. We went on break at around 10:30 so I went to get an extra string out of my guitar case and the first thing I saw was a picture of Jim that I'd taken backstage at the Opry back in July or August. It made me think about him and the struggle he's had, how kind he always was to me as a child at festivals and as an adult on the festival circuit. He always called me by my first name. That meant a lot more to me than he ever could have known. Then I came home to the news of his passing.

"Another great one has gone on... I wonder if Monroe will share tenor duties with Jim when Lester wants to sing a duet number. Maybe Bill will be singing a high baritone part. It's a very sad way to greet the New Year. Jim's wife just passed away 2 weeks before. Please keep his family in your prayers.

"How lucky we are to live in a time where most of us bluegrassers have actually got to meet the founders of the music we hold so dear. The next time you see one of your Bluegrass heroes at a show or whatever let them know how much you love them. I'm glad I did.

"Godspeed, Jim."

Joe Ross writes:

"Truly one of the most polished bluegrass acts featuring some of the most innovative pickin' on this planet. It may never be the same without high lead/tenor front man Jim. May he rest in peace. Jim & Jesse will be missed. Only a few weeks earlier his wife had died of a heart attack.

"Jim McReynolds was born on 2/13/27. The entire bluegrass community mourns this great star, gentleman, and member of the Grand Ole Opry, IBMA's Hall of Honor, Country Music Hall of Fame's 'Walkway of the Stars', Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame and Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Hall of Fame. In 1997 he and Jesse received a Natl. Endowment for the Arts Natl. Heritage Fellowship Award from First Lady Hillary Clinton. We'll certainly miss Jim McReynolds and I offer my sincere sympathy to the McReynolds family."

With much sadness, Joe Ross
