Letters to The Editor Feb 2001
Derek:
Do you know of some festival that will be held at the end of June near London? The Kathy Kallick Band will be going there to play. Are there other places for a band like this to play over there? They tried to get into some festival a week later in Wales but the promoter did not want them because they were already playing the earlier date. Is the UK really that small or is this provincial thinking at work? Larry Carlin, Sausalito, CA, USA. | Write to | Web site | OK Larry - The Wales one has to be Conwy and the one "near" London the week before must be the A1 Festival (which we hear is very good!) near Peterborough, 84 miles north of London (I guess that's "near" by USA standatds...). Peterborough and Conwy are 200 mles apart... Anyone interested contact Larry. Ed. Dear Derek, I was delighted to be the recipient of the congratulations from yourself and my friends Geoff and Pat Bowers in Dec 2000 Northwest Bluegrass News when I obtained my Ph.D. recently - your interest and support all along has been very much appreciated, and helped me to keep pushing even during the bleaker moments during the project. The jam sessions with Geoff and Pat also provided very welcome relaxation from lab. work, and led to my taking up the banjo again after many years. Geoff and Pat will need all their reserves of patience... Eric Kwiatkowski, Nottingham We're really happy for you, Eric - and thanks for the Special C. article Ed. Derek I'd just like to say thanks for the good write up and photographs on the the Faddiley weekend. I have organised another, similar event this year, in fact people were begging me to hold another one as the venue was so good. We are looking for 'volunteer bands' who might wish to perform as part of the concert (but no pay!) A good opportunity for newly formed bands to 'have ago'at performing. It is our intention to keep the weekend 'picking' and very inexpensive, rather than to go down the lines of a festival. Also we had a whole 8 minutes 'spot' on the John Peel BBC Radio 4 Home Truths show. We tried to promote Bluegrass and Old Time as much as possible, but the main focus was on Families playing together. We were quite pleased with it. Dulaman spoke about Bluegrass and included a fair bit (though without banjo) in their set when supporting Carthy & Waterson to a large Folk audience in Whitchurch last week..... we all try to do our bit! Julie Cross, Crewe. Hiya! 'Three of us from the band (DCBs) went to the Chris Metcalf Memorial Concert at Silsden. It was well attended on a cold winter night. The threatened storms and gales passed over us in an extremely dramatic coal-black cloak as we drove towards Bradford on the M62. The concert was at it's most touching when the A1 Festival Band sang Laurie Lewis' Homeplace. They had sung this at the funeral ceremony and a more fitting, well-sung, emotional song could not be found. This band finished off the night of good music and tributes and acquitted themselves well. Geoff Bowers, Nottingham. I'm tickled to death to find this web site. Maybe you can help me. I was raised in Harlan, Ky. On a recent trip there I picked up a great bluegrass radio show. They played a song by Kenny Baker that I thought was great - Jerusalem Ridge I think was the name of it. We don't have much bluegrass outlet here in Montana. Can you help me and give me a contact where I can get some of Kenny Baker's tapes or CD - one with Jerusalem Ridge.
Thank you, Well, can anyone help? There's Ed's Write to address... Ed. I just want to let you know that we, the Fox Tower Bluegrass Band from Germany, had a very successful year 2000. Besides many gigs in Germany we played a lot abroad: Over Easy BG Festival Switzerland, Guildtown Festival Scotland, Dunmore East Festival Ireland, Bluegrass & Appalachian Festival Omagh / Northern Ireland and were invited to showcase during the IBMA week in Louisville, Kentucky. We met a lot of new people and made new friends and we saw a lot of the old ones again. Now we gonna start to concentrate on this year. In the beginning (January / February) we go into the studio to produce a new CD. The releasing date should be in March. I also finished my book The 5-string Banjo in the D Tuning which is now available. For more information please check my personal website or contact me.
Hope to see a lot of you again in 2001.
Dear Derek, Erik Hoogstad, The Netherlands ( in the proud south...) (hoogstad@iaehv.nl) Hi! Being a Brit. from Reading your site makes me feel a little homesick.A great site, keep it up! Peter Atkins, Alberta, Canada (patkins@telusplanet) I was quite excited to come across a site of yours, only to see a couple of familiar faces, Leo and Ray Duffy. I haven't spoken to them in about 18 years and was delighted to see they were still performing. I met them in 1983 when I was in Scotland visiting relatives.
