have been an admirer of Doyle Lawson since his days with J. D. Crowe, The
Country Gentlemen and The Bluegrass Album Band, and finally with his own
group. As soon as you pick an album by Doyle you know that you will get good
modem bluegrass gospel music with great singing and picking. Doyle always has a good group of musicians, and this one is no exception. The full line up is: Doyle Lawson (mandolin/guitar/lead, baritone and low tenor vocal); Barry Scott (guitar/lead, tenor and baritone vocals); Jamie Dailey (acoustic bass/lead, tenor and baritone vocals); Dale Perry (banjo/acoustic bass/bass vocal) and Doug Bartlett (fiddle/tenor and baritone vocal). Although most of the musicians have a try Doyle Lawson sings lead on most tracks. I'll
Keep On Sailing is a nice rousing starter with Doyle on lead vocal and a
very prominent bass vocal from Date Perry and lots of banjo. It was written
by Doyle Lawson and Jamie Dailey. Barry Scott wrote and sings lead on The
Only Things That Matters, a nice gentle song. On The Man Upstairs Doyle sings
lead and Barry Scott sings high lead, and the switching from one vocalist
tothe other works really well. Doyle wrote God Is Watching Over Me, he also
sings lead on this song with a message. Listen To The Bells is the first a-cappella song with Doyle on lead, but what really makes this special for me is Dale Perry's very deep bass singing. Larry Cordle and Leslie Satcher wrote The Eight Hand Of Fellowship. It features Doyle on lead and is my favourite track on the CD. Safe With You At Home has a nice lilting lead vocal by Barry Scott and features prominent fiddle anda nice cascading mandolin. We Need The Light is another a cappella song again with Doyle on lead. Al Phipps wrote the rousing happy sounding Gonna Row My Boat with lots of fiddle. Jamie Dailey, Doyle Lawson and Barry Scott wrote Is That The Bells Of Heaven another happy song with Jamie on lead vocal. Jamie and Doyle wrote Heaven's Not So Far Away, another happy song with Doyle on lead. I Am Glad is the last a-cappella song on the CD. Doyle sings lead on Great white angel, a fast song with lots of banjo. Just Over In Heaven is a fine closing song for the CD. I must mention Dale Perry's bass singing as it is brilliant throughout. Believe it or not I once read someone criticising Doyle Lawson for recording and releasing too many albums. If they are all as good as this he can record as many as he likes. I say: Buy it today!
