Your Editor's Wife and Daughter enter Vocals Contest

While my wife Jean and I were on vacation in California recently to visit our daughter Pam, we all attended the La Grange Fiddle and Banjo Contests Festival, arranged by Cactus Bob and Prairie Flower in the beautiful, historic California Gold Country - La Grange is an old gold mining 'town' on the Tuolumne River.

There were day-long contests for Fiddle, Banjo, Guitar, Mandolin, Dobro and Vocals. We were invited (pressured, even!) to enter the banjo (me) and vocals (the girls) sections. I wisely declined the offer but Pam and Jean gave in and signed up. Pam performed solo and for her first number sang the very appropriate song Mining For Gold (a-cappela) before accompanying herself on guitar for the rousing song Hey Bartender. Jean sang Pretty Saro (a cappela) followed by I Need A Song (on guitar, with me and Pam backing her).  I discovered later that accompanists can only lower the scores...

Pam and Jean sport their trophies!
The labels read "La Grange 2000: 1st (or 3rd) Vocals"

You can imagine how delighted I am to tell you that Jean won Third Prize and Pamela First Prize! And all against respectable competition! Every winner was presented with a cheque and a beautiful, hand-carved, wooden trophy to keep.

We will report of our adventures in full (hopefully with colour photos in the hard copy) in the September edition (there's no space in this one!)

Proud Dad.

Pam is singer/guitar in Belle Monroe and her Brewglass Boys and also singer in the swing band The Chazz Cats - hear her at http://www.chazzcats.com/chazztunes.html
