MORSE TIMINGS

The correct timing of Morse code is as follows:
  • Dot = 1 time unit,

  • Dash = 3 time units,

  • Time between dots and dashes = 1 time unit,

  • Time between characters = 3 time units,

  • Time between words = 7 time units.

The best way to time Morse code is to send the words PARIS or MORSE (or both) and count how many times they are sent in a minute; this is the speed of the Morse in wpm. If PARIS is sent 14 times in a minute, then the speed is 14 wpm. These two words just happen to have the correct number of dots and dashes for this to be so.

Note: THE UK NOVICE LICENCE:
The information given above on character and space speeds applies to those studying Morse in Class-A mode. Those studying for the UK Novice License need to meet special regulations (which are detailed in the 'Help' section of the program). This program caters fully for the Novice licence by having a special mode which changes the settings to suit the Novice examination requirements.
