Implement 'The Koch Method' using Supa Tuta Version 12.04

Many claim that the 'Koch Method' allows fast progress in learning Morse Code. The method rapidly builds the reflexes needed to copy normal Morse. Realistically it requires a computer and it is only since computers became commonplace that it is a feasible option. It also requires special software; Supa Tuta is one of the very few programs that provide fully for the Koch Method.

Supa Tuta is especially good for the Koch method, which is implemented as follows:

  1. Set the 'Character Speed' to, say, 18 wpm and the 'Space Speed' to 11 wpm, giving an overall average speed of 14.3 wpm (check this using 'Average Speed Check' in the 'Practise' section).

    But note:
    • The speeds indicated are only suggestions;
    • If preparing for the UK test you should set 14 wpm 'Character Speed', 7wpm 'Space Speed'; average 10.2 wpm. This is because the test is at 12 wpm and you should not learn much faster than this until after the test).

  2. Decide on a couple of characters then Select the 'Learn The Characters' section to hear how they sound.

  3. Select the 'Practise' option followed by 'Special Alphabet'.

  4. Enter your two characters and set Supa Tuta to send them for 5 minutes.
Copy them on paper with your double-ended pencil. Then compare what was actually sent with what you wrote down.

A score of 90% or over is regarded as having learned the letters at full speed. If you didn't manage 90% then practise again until you do get 90% accuracy

  5. Add a third character and start again. Your success rate will drop at first, but soon rise again. When you are back at 90% add the 4th character, then the 5th, etc., etc.

  6. When you have learned all the characters increase the 'Space speed'. When you can copy 90% increase it again and so on until you can copy all the characters at your chosen full speed.

Some advantages of the Koch method are:

  • It is fast, if it suits you.
  • You learn by reflex. You don't depend upon a look-up table in your head.
  • No time is wasted; all practise time is spent learning.
  • It provides constant positive reinforcement with minimum frustration.

Notes:

  • Constant testing by copying on paper and checking % accuracy is necessary to ensure maximum effectiveness of the Koch method.
  • The best results are obtained using groups of random length - easy in Supa Tuta. It is best to start with a maximum word length of, say, 6 or 7 then increase it as you get better.
  • You might find it best to work on the 10 numbers and 26 letters and start on puctuation and procedures once you have that good feeling for Morse Code.
  • People who sing or (especially) who play instruments often find it easier to learn Morse because they have a good sense of timing and cadence. So maybe it's time to have that piano tuned or take up bluegrass banjo? (details...)
