2419 Private A Brandon of the 6th Battalion The Lancashire Fusiliers listed (Carnarvon, Cape Colony, 15 Jul 1901) as entitled to South Africa Medal and clasps because of campaigns in Cape Colony and Orange Free State. Also listed (Bury, Lancs, Dec 1902) as entitled to same medal for campaigns in South Africa, 1901.

WO100/326: King's South Africa Medal. 6th Battalion not present in South Africa. No Brandons listed.

Apr-Jun: Stayed in hospitals in England 10 weeks with disorderly action of heart

(V.D H or Cardiac Dilatation) (F). 6-17 Apr at Convalescent Hospital, Woodcote Park, Epsom (I); 17 Apr - 7 Jun returned to County of London War Hospital, Epsom (Horton Hospital) (I).

Jun 7: Discharged to furlough (F; I).

Jun 17: Posted to Command ('Cd') Depot Rhyl (J).

Jun: Kinmel Park Command Depot 10 days (F). Complained of shortness of breath and palpitations with occasional cardiac pains. Shows evidence of commencing general artero-sclerosis. A few bronchitus sounds heard generally over chest; no expectoration (F).

Jul 10: Discharge recommended by the Administrative Medical Officer

at Command Depot, Kinmel Park (near Rhyl) as no longer physically fit for war service (F; G; H).

Jul 13: Discharge recommendation confirmed at Preston (G).

Jul 22: Discharged from Command Depot Rhyl (G; J). Service of

year 347 days completed (G).

Sep 6: Weekly pension of 12s 6d calculated on 6 children drops to 1s 6d (L).

Dec 27: Awarded weekly pension by Mediterranean Board of 18d for 6 months (M).

Labour Company ('Coy') (N; O). [Definitely fought in Ypres battle. Exhumed dead in France just after the war; used to tell of gas victims, some sat round playing cards, in trenches: Fred Brandon, Apr & Nov 2000].

Nov 28: On leave in UK (N).

Dec 12: Returned to France from leave in UK (N).

1920

Jan 4: Mediterranean pension expires (M).

Jan 17: Invalided to UK with Debililty (N). (A date of Feb 21is given for

leaving France elsewhere) (O).

Feb 13: Posted to Eastern Command Labour Corps (O).

Feb 16: At Park Royal stated case for Debility due to exposure. Three

hospitals named where treatment given: ?Penny Siding Hospital, ?14 Station Army Hospital, and Queen Mary Hospital, Whalley (P).

Feb 17: Posted to C Company ('Coy') (O). Medical Officer at Park Royal states

unfit for exhumation work owing to shortness of breath and palpitations. Complains of pains about shoulders. Recommended discharge (R).

Feb 19: Medical Board at Putney (London District Discharge Centre) ruled

that Debility not permanent (Q). 'Feeling weak & unfit for heavy work. Heart and lungs are normal and he is not debilitated. No disability found' (R).

Feb 26: Discharged by Medical Board at Putney as being surplus to

Miltary requirements (O); no grounds for pension as no disability (T).
